What is pressure-treated timber?
Pressure treatment is a preservative process carried out after the timber has been cut and prepared. The timber is placed in a sealed treatment vessel, where air is removed and preservative is forced deep into the wood under pressure. This is far more effective than brushing on a surface treatment, which only protects the outer layer.
The preservative helps protect vulnerable softwood against fungal decay and insect attack. It does not make timber indestructible, waterproof or maintenance-free. What it does provide is a far stronger defence against the conditions that cause ordinary outdoor wood to rot prematurely.
For outdoor furniture and garden buildings, treated redwood is a particularly practical material. Redwood is generally more receptive to pressure treatment than denser timber, allowing preservative to penetrate effectively. The result is timber that remains a sound choice for regular outdoor use when it has been properly manufactured and installed.
Pressure treated timber vs untreated: the key differences
The biggest difference is how each material copes with moisture. Untreated softwood absorbs water readily. Rot often starts in the least visible areas: underneath seat slats, at the base of posts, around joints and within cut ends.
Pressure-treated timber is protected from within, so occasional scratches, weathering and normal use do not immediately expose bare, unprotected wood. Appearance is a separate issue. Both treated and untreated timber will weather outdoors. The treatment specification should still match the application. Timber intended for above-ground garden furniture is not necessarily suitable for permanent ground contact. If a project includes structural posts, retaining edges or components buried in soil, ask for timber treated for that level of exposure. The right treatment is part of the build, not an optional extra.
When untreated timber can be the right choice
Untreated timber is not automatically poor timber. It can be entirely appropriate for indoor furniture, joinery, decorative features kept in a dry covered space, or projects where the wood will be protected by a well-designed exterior system.
Naturally durable species are another exception. Some hardwoods and specialist timbers have a natural resistance to decay, although this does not remove the need for good design, drainage and maintenance. They also tend to cost more and can have different sourcing, weight and fixing requirements.
For a short-life project, untreated softwood may be a reasonable budget choice. The key is to be honest about its expected service life. If you are building a temporary display, a seasonal feature or an item that will live under full cover, treatment may not be necessary. Even the best pressure treatment cannot overcome poor construction. Water needs somewhere to go. A garden building needs a sound base, adequate roof overhang and ventilation.
Fixings matter as well. Outdoor timber expands and contracts as moisture levels change, so joints and screws need to be selected and fitted with movement in mind. Quality craftsmanship reduces places where water can sit and makes it easier for the whole piece to dry after rain.

End grain absorbs moisture faster than the face of a board, so this small step is particularly useful on posts, rails and made-to-measure alterations.
Expect some movement. Minor cracks and checking are normal in solid timber as it responds to changing humidity. These surface changes are different from rot. Warning signs of decay include wood that feels soft or spongy, persistent darkening in damp areas, crumbling fibres and loose fixings where the surrounding timber has weakened.
A coloured wood stain or oil is optional rather than essential for preservation when timber has been properly pressure treated. Choose it for appearance and additional weather resistance, not because it replaces the original treatment. Follow the product instructions and allow new treated timber enough time to dry before applying a coating.
Choosing the better value for your garden
The right comparison is not simply the price of treated versus untreated boards. Consider how long the item needs to last, where it will stand, how much rain and shade it receives, and whether you are prepared to maintain or replace it.
